Speaking of which, did you know that Sanjay Leela Bhansali has recomposed three iconic songs for the series?

Here’s what we know about the music of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Have you listened to the song ‘Sakal Ban’? The first song released from the album ‘Heeramandi’ was ‘Sakal Ban’. The lyrics of this song have a 700-year-old history. Sufi singer Amir Khusro was the first to write this spiritual melody. In the ‘Heeramandi’ song ‘Sakal Ban’, one can notice the heavy use of the colour yellow, which symbolises the mustard flower in the spiritual context of the original song.

Anyone who hears the music must have noticed a familiarity. In 1964, Ashok Kumar and Raj Kumar acted together in a film called ‘Dooj Ka Chand’. The track for ‘Heeramandi’ is a ghazal version of a song from that film. The original was called ‘Phool Gendva Na Maro’ and was sung by Manna Dey under the music direction of Roshan. Bhansali’s reinterpretation described it as inspired by traditional lyrics. The new version for ‘Heeramandi’ is sung by Barnali Ganguly.

The song ‘Nazariya Ki Maari’ is a remake of a song from ‘Pakeezah’. It was originally titled ‘Najariya Ki Mari’ and first appeared in Kamal Amrohi’s 1972 film ‘Pakeezah’. Meena Kumari played the lead role and was sung by Rajkumari and composed by Naushad. Although the lyrics of the original song were not mentioned, SLB also referred to it as a traditional inspiration. The new version was sung by Madhubanti Bagchi.

Sonakshi Sinha seems to play the rebel who breaks out and tries to establish her own identity. Aditi Rao Hydari’s character is involved in the freedom struggle and seems to be leading a revolt. Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman and Adhyayan Suman also appear in the trailer.
