NFL analyst is not happy about the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback situation

The Pittsburgh Steelers made significant changes to the quarterback position this offseason: The team parted ways with Kenny Pickett and brought in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.

It remains to be seen exactly how Wilson and Fields will develop (Wilson is expected to start in Week 1), but there is no doubt that Pittsburgh has improved its situation at the quarterback position after sending Pickett, Mitch Trubisky and Mason Rudolph to the field in 2023.

Still, Jared Dubin of CBS Sports believes that the quarterback position, along with the wide receiver position, is the biggest hole or question mark on the team’s roster heading into training camp. He also believes that it’s “pretty risky” to expect either Wilson or Fields to play.

And then the Steelers no longer have Diontae Johnson to soak up offense, and they’re banking on either a rebound from Russell Wilson or a significant move from Justin Fields, both of which are pretty risky.

It’s certainly fair to question Wilson and Fields, but equating this situation with the Steelers’ wide receiver position is incorrect. At the very least, both signal-callers have shown they can be a plus in an offense.

George Pickens enters the 2024 season as the team’s undisputed No. 1 receiver after his best season in 2023, but there are only question marks behind him and it is impossible to name a true No. 2 receiver.

Roman Wilson could be that guy, but he’s a rookie, so no one can predict what he’ll bring in year one. Outside of him, guys like Van Jefferson, Quez Watkins, and Calvin Austin don’t exactly inspire confidence as a potential No. 2 and are probably best suited for roles lower down the order.

It’s fair to be skeptical about Pittsburgh’s quarterbacks, but the biggest gap right now is at wide receiver, and the Steelers should explore all available options to bolster that position before the regular season.
