Cars with the best resale value for 2024

Cars with the best resale value for 2024

(iSeeCars) – According to iSeeCars’ calculations, the single largest cost of vehicle ownership is a car’s loss of value over time, or depreciation. While almost all cars lose value over time, the amount and timing of depreciation can vary by model. iSeeCars’ analysis of over 15 million vehicles shows depreciation (and remaining resale value) for new cars after 3, 5, 7 and 10 years. By comparing the price of a used car to its cost when new, iSeeCars can determine how much value a car retains based on length of ownership. The most common time period for evaluating a vehicle’s depreciation is 5 years after new purchase, so 5-year depreciation is a useful benchmark when comparing the remaining value of different vehicles.

As new car prices continue to rise, all of the costs associated with the purchase become more important to the average car buyer. While buyers can easily recognize the rising MSRP of new cars, they may not understand the second most expensive “cost” of buying a new car: depreciation.

While all new cars experience depreciation, the amount of depreciation varies considerably between models and manifests itself as the residual value a vehicle retains (also called resale value or residual value) when it enters the used car market. Residual value is crucial because it indicates how much money a new car buyer will get back for a vehicle when it is sold as a used car or used as a trade-in when purchasing the next car.

There are a few basic guidelines to keep in mind when looking for the best resale value. First, luxury cars tend to lose value faster than similar models from non-luxury brands. For example, a Land Rover Range Rover and a Kia Telluride are similar in size, but the Land Rover has a much higher MSRP and therefore experiences a much higher depreciation after a few years than the Kia. This is despite the Range Rover’s premium nameplate, higher original value, and excellent off-road capabilities.

Models that tend to hold their value better include heavy-duty full-size pickups like the Ford F-Series Super Duty and midsize pickups like the Ford Ranger. Smaller, fuel-efficient models from the compact car and compact SUV segments have also become more desirable in recent years due to rising fuel costs. The Jeep Wrangler and Subaru Forester are two examples of small SUVs with high resale value, while the hybrid-powered Ford Maverick, a fuel-efficient compact pickup, holds its value extremely well. All of these models have received awards for best resale value from various publications.

From a brand perspective, Lexus and Toyota are two of the automakers with the best resale value, but buyers should use the lists below to identify the models with the best resale value in each major vehicle category.
