On Saturday, attendees will gather in Grand Rapids, Michigan, for the first rally for former President Donald Trump since the Pennsylvania rally was assassinated last week. It will also be the first rally since Trump and JD Vance became the Republican nominees for president and vice president.

Trump survived the assassination attempt on July 13 at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The following week, Trump attended the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee and ended the week with a long, rambling acceptance speech.

Trump and Vance will appear at Van Andel Arena, which can accommodate more than 12,000 attendees, who may face additional security measures after the US Secret Service’s handling of the Pennsylvania rally came under fire.

Trump won and lost Michigan

Michigan is a crucial swing state for the 2024 elections.

In 2016, Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by a narrow margin of just over 10,000 votes, receiving 47.6% of the vote compared to Clinton’s 47.4%.

In 2020, President Joe Biden beat Trump by a few percentage points, receiving 50.6% of the vote compared to Trump’s 47.8%.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is a leading Democratic candidate whose name is often mentioned as a possible alternative to Biden as he resists growing calls to drop out of the race.

In a video posted Saturday, Whitmer welcomed Trump and Vance to the state and praised Michigan’s policies, such as protecting reproductive rights and a pro-union stance.
