3 great titles. 1 decision. Vote for One Book One Parish today at SML

It’s that time of year again—the time of year when you get to decide which book will be the next One Book One Parish title. Each year, Shreve Memorial Library’s One Book One Parish campaign brings Caddo Parish together in a parish-wide book discussion. In years past, we have discussed numerous books, including Destiny Birdsongs Nobody is magic, Lynda Rutledge’s West with Giraffes, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett and Queen Sugar by Natalie Baszile, to name a few. This year we have three great titles to choose from and we need your help in deciding which will be the winner of the One Book One Parish title.

This year you can choose from:

  • Buttermilk Graffiti: A Chef’s Journey of Discovery to America’s New Melting Pot Cuisine by Edward Lee, A fascinating journey through America, exploring the stories, foods and cultural influences of the diverse American population, complemented by 40 original recipes.
  • The first lie wins by Ashley Elston, a fast-paced, suspenseful thriller about a mysterious woman caught in a web of deception. With so many lies and twists in the plot, you don’t know who to trust or what will happen next.
  • James: A Novel by Percival Everett, a retelling of the American literary classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Told from Jim’s perspective, which puts the character in a radically new light.

All three titles would be excellent choices for One Book One Parish, but the decision is not mine. It is yours. Through July 31, you can cast your vote for the next One Book One Parish title by visiting any Shreve Memorial Library branch or by voting online at https://bit.ly/OBOP24vote. The book with the most votes will be chosen as the 2024 One Book One Parish title, and the winner will be announced shortly after voting closes. So which will it be? Three great titles, one decision—yours! Vote today, and keep dreaming, discovering, and doing.

The Last Murder at the End of the World: Novel by Stuart Turton (fiction)

From the bestselling author of The 7 ½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle And The devil and the dark water comes an inventive, high-concept crime thriller: a clever mystery, an extraordinary setting, and a bold solution. Solve the murder to save what’s left of the world. Outside the island, there is nothing: the world was destroyed by a mist that swept across the planet, killing everyone it touched. On the island: It’s idyllic. One hundred and twenty-two villagers and three scientists live in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm, and feast, observing their nightly curfew, and doing as the scientists tell them. Until, to the islanders’ horror, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And then they learn that the murder has triggered a downgrade of the security system around the island, the only thing that has kept the mist at bay. If the murder isn’t solved within 107 hours, the mist will suffocate the island – and everyone on it. However, the security system has also erased everyone’s memories of what happened last night. That means someone on the island is a murderer – and people don’t even know it. And the clock is ticking.

Dominoes: A Novel by Phoebe McIntosh (fiction)

domino is set in London, 29 days before a young couple’s wedding. Layla is a mixed-race woman – with a black Jamaican mother and a white father she’s never met – and Andy is a white man of Scottish descent. When they first meet at a party, they can’t believe how instant their chemistry is and how quickly their relationship develops. Funnily enough, they even have the same last name: McKinnon. Layla’s best friend Sera isn’t so sure about Andy, or the fact that her best friend is engaged to a white man. As the wedding approaches, Sera urges her friend to research her lineage further, which leads Layla to a shocking discovery: it’s extremely likely that Andy’s ancestors enslaved Layla in Jamaica, and that the money from that enslavement helped build his family’s wealth. What seemed like a fairytale romance suddenly goes off the rails when Layla begins to uncover parts of her history and identity that she never imagined – or that she had simply learned to ignore. In doing so, she arrives in Jamaica for the first time, where she learns truths about her family history that will change the way she feels about herself and her future. As the time until her wedding approaches, Layla must make a decision: commit to the man she loves or reveal a shameful past that has gone unspoken for far too long.
