The Green Bay Packers hope to sign Jordan Love to a new contract before training camp, reports Jeremy Fowler

The Green Bay Packers are in a special situation with their young quarterback. Jordan Lovewho, after half a season in the elite sector, wants to cash in with a generous contract extension.

Love was behind it Aaron Rodgers the first three seasons of his career and then earned the starting spot in the fourth year, 2023. His rookie contract was set to expire after the 2023 season and Green Bay had dropped a fifth-year option worth over $20 million. Well, Love hadn’t started a game until last May and that was a hefty sum, so the sides agreed to a one-year extension for about $11 million with the potential of $22 million in bonuses for the 2024 season.

Now, however, Love has played and performed very well down the stretch, especially in the playoffs. Of course, he wants to be paid accordingly, which means a massive contract extension in the stadium of Trevor Lawrence, a quarterback who is certainly a step below Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, but who still gets paid similar amounts of money to those guys, rebalancing the market for his quarterback class.

According to Jeremy Fowler, who covered Love’s contract negotiations on SportsCenter Saturday morning, that late-season surge really changed the market for Packers quarterbacks, especially given the numbers some other quarterbacks have received (ahem, ahem, Trevor Lawrence).

“It’s interesting because it was really just one season, a small sample size, he was really good towards the end of the year, in the second half he was one of the best quarterbacks in the league,” Fowler said, noting that those few months of play completely redefined Love’s value across the league.

“The difficult thing is that I’ve talked to a lot of scouts and a lot of executives believe he’s one of the top 10 passers in the entire NFL now,” Fowler added. “Just a small sample size and that, as we know, costs a lot of money.”

However, he believes the Packers have no plans to let Love go and will ultimately sign him to whatever contract is necessary before the fall.

“So they’re going to try to work something out. The Packers would like to get a long-term deal with Love before training camp. That’s their goal. A little bit of pressure on the Packers after all the years of problems and fiascos with Aaron Rodgers. They’d like to have a clean process here to get this done with Jordan Love.”

According to Fowler, Expect Love has settled into Green Bay, Wisconsin for the long term after a promising 2023. In the coming years, there will be Spotted Cow and a Swiss cheese-style headpiece!
