How Anthony Michael Hall’s Birthday Included a Breakfast Club Reunion (Exclusive)

Anthony Michael Hall made the most of his 56th birthday!

The actor who stars in the new Netflix film Trigger warningreveals to PEOPLE in this week’s issue how his last memorable interaction with fans led to an impromptu birthday dinner with his co-stars from The Breakfast Club.

Hall says it was a “bummer of a fortune” when he held a book signing at Comic-Con on his birthday in April. He says, “I had three birthday cakes (from fans). I thought, ‘I should do more book signings on my birthday.'”

It wasn’t the only sweet treats that made Hall’s birthday so special, he also celebrated his big day with a reunion with Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy and Judd Nelson from The Breakfast Club.

“Judd, Molly and her husband and some other friends went to dinner after the book signing,” he says. “It was really fun.”

Hall says he broke tradition and paid for the whole table even though it was his birthday. He teases, “You know what? I like to keep people on their toes.”

“It was really great, but it was cool to see Molly and we share pictures of our kids,” says Hall, who has 13-month-old Michael Anthony Hall II with his wife, Lucia Oskerova.

“Judd is still John Bender,” he adds. “He’s an original. Really. I love that. He’s part Hunter Thompson, part… He has so many different interests. He’s really a brilliant guy. I mean, he’s really super, super smart.”

Hall shares a few more of his “last ones” below.

The last time I was starstruck

During recording Community on the Paramount lot I sneaked over to watch the Clint Eastwood film J. Edgar. After spying on him for about 10 minutes, I got caught and kicked out. That sounds more serious than it was, but it was fun.

The last time I flinched

Whenever I appear on TV. It’s kind of weird, like looking at photos in your yearbook. I literally experienced my puberty on film in the early 80s; that was painful enough.

Last moment of gratitude

My wife, son and I had just come back from Toronto and it was hectic. I had five bags and our dog, but just being with them… I don’t want to sound cheesy, but I’ve waited a long time and when you start a family, that’s the best thing.
