The last quarter of the season will show where Michigan State stands in the conference

Michigan State and coach Jonathan Smith are preparing for an exciting season.

Coach Smith and his coaching staff have spent the offseason setting Michigan State up for success for the upcoming season and beyond. With the college football season about to begin, Michigan State is regularly considered one of the worst teams in the Big Ten.

The Spartans have made many successful roster changes that they hope will help accelerate the turnaround of Michigan State’s football program. Given the situation Smith and his coaching staff have found themselves in, it’s no surprise that Michigan State is entering the season with low expectations.

In addition to the problems Smith and his coaching staff brought with them when they arrived, Michigan State is about halfway through the season facing Ohio State at home, Oregon on the road, Iowa at home and Michigan on the road in five weeks. This is another reason why many believe the upcoming season will be difficult for the Spartans’ new regime, as Michigan State has one of the most demanding schedules in the Big Ten and the country.

However, Smith wants to bring Michigan State’s football program back to national prominence, but to do so he must first prove himself to be a serious opponent in the Big Ten, a conference in which the team is one of the bottom teams.

Even though Michigan State and Smith have won four games in a row in the conference, they will likely go 4-0; they have just as many games within the conference that they could win. Michigan State plays Maryland and Boston College to start the season, but the final four games will really decide where Michigan State stands in the conference.

Smith and Michigan State will close out the season with three games in East Lansing against very beatable schools. After completing that difficult four-game series, Michigan State will play Indiana, Purdue and Rutgers at home and Illinois on the road to close the season.

While Michigan State could lose all four games against some of the best teams in the Big Ten, they could also win most, if not all, of their final four games of the season. With Smith looking to turn around Michigan State’s football program, winning most of their final four games of the season could help the team climb into the top ten teams in the conference.

This would bring the Spartans closer to a return to the national stage, where Michigan State football belongs.
