Rory McIlroy’s week at Royal Troon was so tough that after just 22 holes he admitted he was already thinking about where he would vacation next week. Which is fitting, because there’s also a clip of him that would be perfect for Southwest Airlines’ next “Wanna get away?” commercial.
McIlroy’s dreams of ending his 10-year drought at majors were pretty much dashed with a first-round 78 at the British Open, but even making the cut became unlikely when he made triple bogey on the par-5 4th hole on Friday.
“Yeah, I think when I made the 8 on the fourth hole, that was it,” McIlroy said. “After 22 holes in the tournament, I’m thinking about where I’m going to go on vacation next week.”
But it got worse. Not only did McIlroy not have his golf game under control, but he also tried to throw a club to himself at one point and failed miserably. Watch the butt of the club dig into his face.
Tough scene. Sorry Rory, but yeah, this is too good not to share.
For the four-time major champion, it’s not about getting away, it’s just about where he gets away to. I hope you have a great trip, Rory. Maybe you should just leave the clubs at home for a while.
Is it the British Open or the Open Championship? The name of the final men’s major of the golf season is the subject of ongoing debate. The official name of the event, as explained in this commentary by former R&A chairman Ian Pattinson, is the Open Championship. However, because many golf fans in the United States continue to refer to it as the British Open and look for news surrounding the event accordingly, Golf Digest continues to use both names in its coverage.
