Robert Taylor is back and Netflix has him

Robert Taylor is back and Netflix has him

The Longmire Star will shine in the upcoming series set in Australia Area.

And just when we thought we would like to see Longmire Star and C&I reader favorite Robert Taylor in a new series, and Netflix also announces that the Australian-born actor is returning to his roots Down Under in Areaa neo-western drama that is set to premiere on the streamer on October 24th.

What is it about? According to Netflix Area “follows the struggle for power in the remote and unforgiving Australian outback as the world’s largest cattle station is left without an identifiable heir. Imagine the family drama of your favorite prime-time soap opera, but set in a region so harsh and remote that almost anything can kill you.”

Wow. Tell us more.

“When Marianne Station has no clear successor, generational conflict threatens to tear the Lawson family apart. Sensing that this once-great dynasty is in decline, the outback’s most powerful factions – rival cattle barons, desert gangsters, aboriginal elders and billionaire miners – are moving in to strike. Billions of dollars are at stake, and everyone wants a piece of the pie.”

Robert Taylor in "Area"

Robert Taylor as Colin Lawson in Area

Taylor plays Colin Lawson alongside Anna Torv (The last of us) as Emily Lawson, Michael Dorman (For all humanity, Joe Pickett) as Graham Lawson, Sam Corlett (Vikings: Valhalla) as Marshall Lawson and Philippa Northeast (limbo) as Susie Lawson.

Area — filmed under the working title Desert King — was created by Timothy Lee (Mysterious Street) and Ben Davis (Outback wrestler, Bondi Rescue). Davies said in a prepared statement that the series was born under unlikely circumstances. During the Covid pandemic, he and producer Rob Gibson (Colin from Accounting) strolled and chatted as they strolled along Sydney’s Bondi Beach, and were “excited by the prospect of filming a big-scale, suspenseful action drama set on a cattle station, in a part of the country not often seen on screen.”

“It was a complete contrast to being surrounded by the crowds in Bondi. People in their gym clothes and wetsuits walked past us with their surfboards, while Rob and I made up stories about people in jeans, boots and flannel shirts in the Top End.”

And if you want an idea of the production values – well, again, according to Netflix: Area “was filmed throughout the Northern Territory and South Australia in locations so remote they are rarely inhabited – let alone shown on screen. Locations include the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park – with special permission from the traditional owners – and Tipperary Station, a real, working cattle station so big it has its own airstrip and school.

“For scale, the real Anna Creek Station, which served as one of the inspirations for the series, is larger than the state of New Jersey. Put it this way: The country is so vast and so unfathomable that the preferred modes of transportation are helicopters and private jets. Australia is about the size of the 48 contiguous U.S. states, but has about a third of the population, and some of the outback landowners own landholdings larger than many other countries. (Anna Creek Station is larger than all of Slovenia.) This is a huge industry, spread over a huge area — and with a huge amount of money at stake.”
