1 dead and 1 seriously injured after speeding: SUV ignores red light and rams truck

DEARBORN, Mich. (WXYZ) — One person is dead and another was injured after a crash on Michigan Avenue in Dearborn early Friday morning.

Because of the accident, police were dispatched to the area between Michigan Avenue and Nowlin Street, east of Outer Drive, at around 7:59 a.m.

During their investigation, it was found that an SUV was traveling quickly eastbound on Michigan Avenue and failed to stop at a light. It collided with an F-150 traveling north of Nowlin.

The driver of the F-150, a 33-year-old woman from Dearborn, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name has not been released, but 7 News Detroit has learned she was a popular doctor. Friends identify her as Dr. Ghada Mustapha.

The driver of the SUV, a 26-year-old from Taylor, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the family of the deceased and our thoughts are with everyone affected by this devastating accident. We thank the public for their patience as we continue to keep the area closed and conduct our investigation into this serious accident,” Dearborn Police Commander Timothy McHale said in a statement.

Omar Mouhajer, owner of Hudson’s Cleaners on Michigan Avenue near Nowlin Street, said today started like any other.

“I’m here 10 hours a day, six days a week. I’ve been here for 30 years, so I’ve seen it all,” he said.

Mouhajer was standing at the counter with his coffee, waiting for customers, but then, shortly before 8 a.m., the unthinkable happened.

“She was going north at the light, the F-150 and the woman was going east at a high rate of speed, struck her from the side and dragged her all the way to the intersection where the flowers are now. Someone came and put them up,” he recalled.

Mouhajer called 911 and rushed to help.

“I couldn’t open the truck,” he said.

He said he then ran to the at-fault driver’s SUV.

“We pulled the woman out. We left her on the ground. Then I went back to the F-150 and tried to open the door to see what was wrong with the woman. We still couldn’t open the door. I tried to talk to her. She’s not responding,” Mouhajer said.

Mouhajer has a message for everyone behind the wheel.

“I’m asking everyone to slow down because the lady was literally going 90 miles an hour,” he said.

“(It’s) better to be late than to regret it. If you go somewhere and you’re 5 or 10 minutes late, that’s OK. It’s not the end of the world. Look what happened.

She is married. She has three children. She is a doctor,” Mouhajer said.

“The whole community is shocked by this tragic accident. That’s why we’re asking everyone to slow down. Take it easy,” he said.
