VOSD Podcast: Mega Shelter faces a tough battle

Mayor Todd Gloria’s proposal to open the city’s largest homeless shelter yet is approaching a pivotal moment Monday, when the City Council will finally vote on the plan.

Reporter Lisa Halverstadt joined the podcast to explain why many analysts are skeptical of the 30-year lease and why some activists fear it doesn’t fit the city’s current homeless needs.

Also on the housing front, Halverstadt has an update on the state’s decision to cut $10 million in funding that was supposed to go to the county to build a village of tiny houses for homeless residents. Since the board stopped the project due to community concerns, the money will now go to San Jose, and many people aren’t happy about it.

The hosts will also discuss Rep. Sara Jacobs, who was the subject of a new profile this week by reporter Will Huntsberry, who examined how her family’s money has influenced her progressive politics.

Finally, staying on a national scale, the hosts will continue to exchange speculation about the prospects of Joe Biden’s presidential candidacy – this time based on the opinions of a number of local Democratic delegates.
