Michigan State Football Disregard or honest assessment of performance since 2010

The Michigan State football team has experienced many highlights since 2010. Beating Stanford in the Rose Bowl, then Conner Cook’s 20-point win over number five Baylor in the Cotton Bowl, and who could forget the infamous “Trouble with the Snap” play against Michigan in 2015?

However, there were many low points that most Michigan State football fans would like to put behind them. The subpar performance, 3-9, after making the College Football Playoff the year before. The 5-7 after going 11-2 and beating Pitt in the Peach Bowl. And then the firing of former head coach Mel Tucker.

247 Sports’ Brad Crawford has listed Michigan State football as one of the most overrated teams since the 2010 season. Other teams listed were Texas, USC, Wisconsin, Georgia, Texas A&M, Florida, Auburn, TCU and North Carolina.

Crawford mentioned that the Spartans finished the season unranked despite being in the top 25 five times earlier in the season.

“There was a lot of hype surrounding the Spartans in 2015 after they won the Big Ten and reached the College Football Playoff the previous season, but a 9-3 loss raised questions about the future of then-coach Mark Dantonio. After winning 10 games and rebounding in 2017, Michigan State suffered a 7-6 loss the following season despite a preseason ranking of No. 12.”

Crawford also mentioned, “By 2020, Michigan State had said goodbye to Dantonio and hired Mel Tucker as head coach. That term also ended prematurely.”

If you’re a fan of Michigan State football, it might be hard to hear Michigan State football on a list of the 10 overrated teams. However, this could be a good incentive for new head coach Jonathan Smith and his team. Going unranked for five of the last 15 years, despite already being ranked, is not good for any team. Jonathan Smith can change that and create a culture of consistently being in the top 25 all year long.
