Netflix documentary series “Karen Read” announced – NBC Boston

Netflix has announced a three-part documentary series focusing on the murder trial of Karen Read and the death of Boston police officer John O’Keefe.

Read was charged with, among other things, the premeditated murder of her boyfriend, O’Keefe. Prosecutors alleged she hit him with her SUV outside a home in Canton, Massachusetts, in January 2022. But her defense argued she was the victim of a law enforcement conspiracy to protect the real killers.

After a months-long trial that attracted widespread media attention, the jury failed to reach a verdict and the case was declared invalid.

A fifth member of the jury in Karen Read’s murder trial has come forward, according to a new statement from her defense team, saying the jury would have voted to acquit Read. The yet-to-be-titled Netflix series is currently being produced by Sandpaper Films and will be co-directed by Danielle Johnson and Rob Miller.

“The team feels immensely privileged to bring this important series to a global Netflix audience,” Johnson and Miller told Netflix. “It is a case that has attracted enormous public attention and has far-reaching consequences. We also recognize that this is an extremely sensitive case and we are committed to treating everyone involved with the respect and consideration they deserve.”

The mistrial is far from the end of the case, and it remains unclear whether O’Keefe will ever see justice. Prosecutors have said they plan to retry Read while the defense pushes for the dismissal of two charges – second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident causing death. The jury list remains sequestered as questions arise about juror safety. And the prosecution must deal with the fallout as one of its key witnesses – former lead state police investigator Michael Proctor – has been suspended without pay for his conduct.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for the documentary series.
