The internet-famous “tortilla-wrapped bird” comes from Amarillo!

All over the internet this week there was a buzz about a bird in Texas that was rescued in a very unconventional way. The rescue involved what was initially thought to be a baby hawk and a warm tortilla. Of course, such an interesting rescue could only happen in one place: Amarillo, Texas.

The Ballad of the Tortilla Bird in Amarillo, Texas

The story made headlines online. An animal rescue was contacted about a baby bird that a family had found hanging out and swimming in their yard. The person from the animal rescue asked if they had put it in a box and got an answer that no one would have expected. The family had wrapped it in a warm tortilla to protect it.

The funny thing about this story is that it might lead someone not from the Lone Star State to think we all walk around with a “just in case” tortilla in our pocket. Got shredded cheese and want to make a quesadilla? Just ask the nearest Texan if you can borrow their pocket tortilla.

The good news is that the bird is safe and out of the tortilla.

Amarillo tortilla bird officially called “Taquito”.

The Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center posted an update on social media about the “Tortilla Bird.” The bird turned out to be a Mississippi Kite. The bird has a healthy appetite and is doing well. The rehabilitation center is now naming the bird “Taquito.”

The bird will be in their care for the next few months and, interestingly, is not the only Mississippi kite currently in their care. It sounds like Taquito, the tortilla bird, is doing well.
