German dairy workers prepare “major nationwide strike”

Dairy workers in Germany are prepared to launch a “major nationwide strike” if a wage dispute is not resolved next week.

The Food, Beverages and Catering Union (NGG) announced that a third round of negotiations with dairy companies, including Danone, Ehrmann and Nestlé, will take place on Monday, July 22.

According to Mustafa Öz, chief negotiator and regional chairman of NGG Bavaria, around 19,000 employees in 28 dairies and cheese factories throughout Bavaria are on warning strikes.

He added that the strikes had “paralysed” more than 90 production shifts, resulting in “significant production losses”.

The union is demanding a fixed wage increase of 411 euros ($447) per month for each worker. It added that employers “offered only 150 euros as a fixed amount in the first year.” For the following year, they have proposed an additional wage increase of 2.5 percent.

“We are sending a clear signal to the employers: There are only a few hours left until the next meeting at the collective bargaining table. But until then, the warning strikes will continue uninterrupted,” said Öz.

“A fixed, reliable amount more in your wallet has a decisive advantage: everyone would benefit equally. This means skilled workers in the office and in the laboratory, but above all the workers who have previously gone home with lower wages: namely employees in production and in the warehouse, for example.”

Just food has asked Danone, Ehrmann and Nestlé for comment.

At the beginning of the month, the NGG had already warned of a “further escalation” of its dairy workers’ strikes in Bavaria.

Meanwhile, the union also announced on Wednesday (July 17) that confectionery workers in Germany will launch warning strikes after failing to reach a collective agreement with a number of companies.

In Bavaria, around 5,900 employees in the confectionery industry have to go on strike.
