The power of a song is one thing, but the power of Swifties is quite another. St. Vincent – aka Texas alt-rock powerhouse Annie Clark – can attest to both. Towards the latter half of the last decade, Clark went into the studio with Taylor Swift and producer Jack Antonoff and the trio wrote Swift’s song Cruel summer It appeared on the pop superstar’s 2019 album “Lover” and that was it.
But that was not the – last year, on the back of Cruel summer performed at Swift’s record-breaking Eras Currently touring the UK, Swift fans caused the song to go viral, leaving Swift’s record label Republic with virtually no choice but to re-release it as a single some four years after it was first released. Recently, Clark told this writer in an interview for Music Week what it was like to see the Swifties show off their full power.
“The Taylor Swift Cruel summer “That moment to me was just an absolutely amazing testament to the incredible power of their incredible fans,” Clark said. “They took a song that was on a lot of old records and wasn’t a single at the time and just said, ‘No, we love this song, this song is a hit, guys,’ and they marched it up the charts.”
The song became another chart-topper for Swift, reaching number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. “It was so cool to see that, and I’ve certainly never been a part of anything like that,” Clark continued. “But I haven’t really experienced anything like that in the culture either. You could maybe say running up That Hill with Kate Bush was criticized and new fans were exposed to it, but that’s not really the same. Cruel summer This thing was pure power and lightning in a bottle from their fans who just made something happen.”
It was quite a year for Clark’s union of pop titans as elsewhere, Olivia Rodrigo played one of Clark’s custom-made Ernie Ball Music Man guitars on her spectacular Offal Tour. “I love seeing Olivia Rodrigo play one of my guitars,” Clark said. “Seeing Olivia play fills my heart with joy, but I also feel like I see a lot of young women playing, so I feel like I’ve done my part to make it say, ‘Play that guitar, let’s go!'”
