An event focusing on the cultural construct of Marianism is scheduled for Thursday, September 5, at 5:30 p.m. at the Eastern Monroe Public Library (Hughes Library), 1002 Route 611 in Stroudsburg. Marianism may be a word you, like me, don’t know the meaning of. The definition explains it as a traditional gender role in Latino and Hispanic cultures that describes the ideal behavior for women.

The author Dr. Damary Bonilla-Rodriguez wrote and published the book “Modern Marianismo: Its Relevance and the Connection to Impostor Syndrome and Perfectionism”.

Dr. Bonilla-Rodriguez is known to many local residents for her service as a member of the East Stroudsburg Area School District Board of Education and as a resident of Pike County. In 2014, she was awarded a Coors Light Prize. Reviews (Leader) Finalist and recipient of numerous awards including a proclamation from the NYS Assembly, Proud to be Latina, Soya Poderosa Award as well as many others, including contributions to the Huffington Post. She has also appeared as a national speaker on this and related issues and served on Governor Tom Wolf’s Latino Commission, where she chaired the statewide education committee for six years.

The book challenges prevailing stereotypes and encourages a critical examination of the complex interplay of gender roles and societal expectations. It addresses the cultural construct of Marianism and offers a nuanced examination of the deep-rooted societal expectations of women.

In addition, the work allows her to analyze the idea that women are self-sacrificing and caring figures who are systematically conditioned to put the needs of others above their own. In a recent podcast with Jackie Tapia, Bonilla-Rodgriguez discussed the cultural barriers, societal expectations, and pressures that hold Latinas back. Bonilla-Rodgriguez also emphasizes that Marianism does not only affect Latinas, but all women.

The presentation will provide an opportunity to learn more about the three ideologies covered in the book – Marianism, Perfectionism and Imposter Syndrome – and how they impact people’s lives and careers. The program will also allow for a community discussion about the ideologies and a book signing following the presentation.

This event is presented in partnership with the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, FLECHA, Youth Infusion and Pocono Latin Fest and Rebel Stages.

So make a note of the date and time. Take the opportunity to meet the author in person, talk to him or her and learn more about the topic.
