Windows, Microsoft, Blue Screen of Death: Flights, markets, banks, stock exchange: Microsoft outage paralyzes industries

New Delhi:

From flights to supermarkets to banking, the global Microsoft outage is affecting numerous sectors and threatens to cause massive problems if it is not resolved soon. In India, three airlines – IndiGo, SpiceJet and Akasa Air – are battling technical issues that are affecting bookings, check-in and flight updates. The airlines are now checking in passengers manually.

“We are currently experiencing a technical issue in providing flight disruption updates. Our team is actively working to resolve this issue. We apologize for any inconvenience and will update you once the issue is resolved. Thank you for your patience and cooperation,” Spicejet said in a post on X.

Akasa Air said some of its online services are currently unavailable. “Due to infrastructure issues with our service provider, some of our online services, including booking, check-in and booking management, are temporarily unavailable. We are currently conducting manual check-in and boarding processes at the airports and therefore request passengers with short-term travel plans to arrive at the airport early to check in at our counters,” Akasa Air wrote on X.

IndiGo has also issued a statement. “Our systems are currently affected by a Microsoft outage that is also affecting other companies. During this time, booking, check-in, access to your boarding pass and some flights may be impacted. We thank you for your patience,” it said.

Delhi Airport has said that some services have been affected. “Due to the global IT issue, some services at Delhi Airport have been temporarily affected. We are working closely with all stakeholders to minimise inconvenience to our passengers. Passengers are requested to contact the relevant airline or local help desk for up-to-date flight information. We regret any inconvenience caused to our passengers,” a statement said.

One of the worst affected countries is Australia. According to The Sydney Morning Herald, the outage also affected ABC News 24, which struggled to broadcast news programs. The crisis also hit Woolworths supermarkets, where checkout systems crashed due to the outage. Several customers also complained that their cards were not working. Police systems also failed.

Melbourne Airport said in a statement that several airlines’ check-in processes were impacted due to a global technical issue. Virgin Australia said the outage prevented all aircraft from landing and departing Sydney Airport. “The airline has stopped all inbound and outbound flights, so it’s a complete ground stop; there are no inbound flights and no outbound flights,” a Virgin Australia lounge employee said, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

The London Stock Exchange was also reportedly affected by the outage. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that all flights of several major US airlines – including Delta, United and American Airlines – were grounded on Friday morning due to a communication problem. The 911 emergency numbers in several US states were also affected. The British news channel Sky News is not broadcasting.

In Europe, there are delays at check-in in Amsterdam due to technical problems. At Berlin Brandenburg Airport, flight operations had to be suspended due to the “technical problem,” a spokeswoman told AFP. She could not say when flight operations would resume.

Millions of Windows users worldwide experience the Blue Screen of Death, which causes computers to shut down or restart. In some cases, computers restart repeatedly, affecting services as users lose unsaved data and valuable time.

When the system shuts down, the message “Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We’re just gathering some error information and then we’ll restart it for you” appears on the screen.

Blue screen errors, also known as black screen errors or STOP code errors, can occur when a critical problem forces an unexpected shutdown or restart of Windows.

Microsoft 365 said in a statement that it is investigating the issue.
