Warren County mother sentenced for son’s death

WARREN COUNTY, Mississippi (WJTV) – A Warren County mother has been sentenced in the 2023 death of her infant son.

The Vicksburg Post reported that Judge M. James Chaney sentenced Brooke Mallett to 30 years in the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC). She received 20 years for manslaughter and five years each for the two counts of child neglect.

Mallett was found guilty of the charges on Thursday, June 13.

Mallett and her then-boyfriend John Duke Walker were arrested in April 2023 following the child’s death.

Authorities received a call from a county resident regarding a five-year-old child at her home on Old Highway 27. When officers arrived, they found that the child had special needs and was unable to communicate.

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said officers made contact with Mallet, who was unaware of the 5-year-old’s disappearance. At that point, officers discovered that a 3-year-old had also disappeared from the same home.

According to the sheriff’s office, officers later found the three-year-old in a nearby pond. Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey pronounced the child dead at the scene.
