Ten years after Eric Garner’s death: What has changed?

This week marks the tenth anniversary of the death of Eric Garner. Police put him in a chokehold for selling cigarettes illegally on a Staten Island street. Garner’s final words to police, “I can’t breathe,” became a rallying cry for protesters outraged by police brutality.

Debi Rose was a former Staten Island councilwoman whose district included the block where Garner was killed. Reverend Kirsten Foy is an activist who played a major role in organizing the Garner case. Both spoke with NY1’s Errol Louis about the story of Garner’s murder and his family’s numerous attempts to fight for justice. They also discussed what, if anything, has changed in the decade since.
