Production on FX’s Alien TV series completed, title announced

In addition to Alien: Romulus, which hits theaters exclusively on August 16, Disney, 20th Century Studios and FX have been slowly but steadily working on an ambitious Alien television series created by Fargo’s Noah Hawley. After several delays and strike-related production holdups, principal photography has now wrapped and a seemingly final title has been revealed.

According to Variety, the title is according to Hawley himself and FX boss John Landgraf Alien: Earth. You’re not beating around the bush, are you?

“Noah is deep into working on Season 1 of ‘Alien: Earth’ right now. We’re in post-production, talking to him every week, looking at cuts. We’re pretty optimistic about ‘Alien: Earth’ and we’ve told him that, assuming ‘Alien: Earth’ is a returning television series, he should focus on writing at least two seasons of it before returning to a possible sixth season of ‘Fargo.’ So it’s going to be a while, but I’m also very proud of that show,” Landgraf explained during a long interview.

FX is currently enjoying an immense run of success, with Shógun surpassing its original plans for a mini-series due to critical acclaim and The Bear continuing to be one of the most successful shows currently. Additionally, What We Do in the Shadows is entering its sixth and final season and Reservation Dogs ran for three seasons and also earned FX several award nominations.

Regarding Alien: Earth, Hawley also added some of his post-shoot thoughts: “We just wrapped production, so I’m now on the long post that deals with visual effects… It’s a very big show. It’s nice to spend some time on it… In the first year of anything, you want to feel like you’re not up against the wall with time. I saw four of the eight hours of director’s cuts and was in the process of figuring out what it should be cinematically. That’s one of my favorite parts of making a show.” Plot details (other than the story, which is set on Earth and before the events of the films) are being kept under wraps for now, but the cast includes Sydney Chandler, Alex Lawther, Kit Young, and Tymothy Olyphant, among others.

Rumors and expectations from the studio have been saying for some time that Alien will come to FX on Hulu in 2025 (and likely internationally on Star+ via Disney+). However, it remains to be seen which quarter it falls in. Looking at the usual post-production schedules for bigger shows like this, we wouldn’t expect it to come out until late spring or early summer, but we also have to take into account how the Disney overlords plan to juggle their many major IP releases planned for next year.
