ABOUT THIS SERIES

Goal

In early 2023, ACAPS conducted a secondary data review and analysis to uncover the causes and impacts of the drought in Iraq, focusing on the humanitarian needs arising from its impact on the country’s economy and people’s livelihoods. The outcome of the investigation is a series of reports that include:

1. an overview summarising the main findings of each of the three reports in this series and the key messages

2. a report on the causes and aggravating factors of recurrent droughts in Iraq

3. a report on the impact of droughts, in particular the 2021-2022 drought, on food security and livelihoods

4. a report containing a situation report and an overview of the economic forecasts, future developments and the impact of the current drought.

The report was commissioned and supported by WFP Iraq. Through this evidence-based analysis, ACAPS supports WFP in its work to raise awareness and develop understanding of the costs of inaction in Iraq in order to take appropriate action to reduce the impacts of climate hazards and enable improvements in the living conditions and food security of people in the country.
