TikTok ‘blasphemy’ leads to death sentence for Pakistani Christians

Pakistan (MNN) — Another young Christian is sentenced to death under Pakistan’s notorious blasphemy laws.

The 27-year-old believer is said to have shared a photo of a damaged Koran on TikTok following numerous attacks on the Christian community. last August. Even though the picture did not come from the young man, the court declared it to be blasphemy and punishable by death.

Todd Nettleton with The Voice of the Martyrs USA says: “The blasphemy laws are unfair. There is a presumption of guilt instead of a presumption of innocence.”

“Fortunately, the police have arrested members of the mob and tried to bring them to justice. But then there are rallies in support of further vigilantism against religious minorities,” says Nettleton.

“There must be a change in these blasphemy laws and the way they are enforced, and a return to the rule of law rather than mob rule.”

At least 103 people were charged with blasphemy between January and June this year, according to the Pakistan-based Center for Social Justice (CSJ).

Nettleton says, “We cannot go to them. We cannot necessarily offer comfort to the individual believers and families mentioned above,” but “we can certainly pray for them and for other Christians in Pakistan who are constantly living under this oppression and second-class citizenship.”
