Seattle police officer Auderer, who was caught laughing after Kandula’s death, was fired

Dan Auderer of the Seattle Police Department was fired by interim chief Sue Rahr. KTTH anchor Jason Rantz confirmed the news on Wednesday.

Auderer was caught on bodycam footage laughing and joking about the death of 23-year-old Jaahnavi Kandula on January 23, 2023. According to Rantz, Auderer was making fun of how Seattle lawyers were not taking Kandula’s life seriously in order to pay less in a court case.

“I expect many of you will disagree with my decision and may be upset,” Rahr said, according to Rantz. “At the root of this case lies an extremely difficult decision about how to fairly balance ‘intent and effect.'”

“I believe the impact of his actions is so devastating that it cannot be mitigated by his intention to keep his conversation confidential,” she added. “Allowing the officer to remain on our force would only bring further shame to the entire department. For this reason, I will be terminating his employment. I deeply regret the negative impact my decision has had on him as an individual officer who clearly loves his job and his colleagues. But I have a duty and obligation to put the well-being of the entire organization above any individual officer.”

“I hope that even if you vehemently disagree, you understand why I had to make this decision,” she continued. “Please do not give up on the hope and positive momentum we have built over the past few weeks. This is a great organization and I want each of us to be proud to be part of an honorable department with high ethical standards.”
