Rebecca Taylor, chairwoman of the Democratic Party for San Diego, dies in motorcycle accident

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Rebecca Taylor, chairwoman of the San Diego County Democratic Party, has died in a motorcycle accident in Utah, according to the party and her family.

ABC 10News spoke with Taylor’s father on Wednesday afternoon. He confirmed that she suffered fatal injuries when she was struck from behind while on a motorcycle ride through South Dakota. The San Diego County Democratic Party wrote on Facebook that she was on her way home when the accident happened.

Taylor’s father said she was passionate about many things in her life: politics, the military, motorcycles and advocating for victims of sexual assault.

Several local politicians expressed their sadness over Taylor’s unexpected death and sent their condolences to her friends and family.

“I am deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of Rebecca Taylor. Becca was a tremendous and passionate leader of our local Democratic Party, but she was so much more than that. She was a daughter, sister, veteran, friend to many, and a shining light who inspired us all to live life to the fullest,” Mayor Todd Gloria’s statement said. “Her leadership, passion, and dedication to our community have left an indelible mark. She will be greatly missed, and I extend my deepest condolences to her family and friends during this difficult time. Thank you, Becca, for everything. Good luck.”

Nora Vargas, chair of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, described Taylor as a remarkable leader and valued member of the community.

“I am devastated to hear of Rebecca Taylor’s passing… Becca’s legacy of service, dedication and kindness left a lasting mark on the San Diego region,” Vargas said. “My deepest condolences go out to her family, friends and all who knew her. We will honor her memory by continuing the important work that meant so much to her.”

Rep. Scott Peters says Peters was a former member of his team and therefore witnessed their involvement firsthand. Read his full statement below:

“Team Peters lost one of its brightest alumni stars last night and we are deeply saddened. We met Becca Taylor when she worked as an organizer on our 2014 re-election campaign. It was a tough and tense time, but above the dull noise of a crowded campaign office, we could hear Becca’s distinctive and optimistic voice cheering others on, a one-man cheerleader squad. We have remained loyal friends and supporters ever since.

“Becca was always rooting for us and looking out for us. And we were always cheering Becca on, whether during her run for Central Committee, during her search for a new job, and finally when she became Chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party. Becca was a Navy veteran, a talented and tireless advocate and organizer for Democratic causes, and a true friend. Her infectious laugh, bright smile, and sparkle were always present. Scott and his leadership team were always very proud of the leaders that emerge from our offices and campaigns; today we mourn the loss of a great one.

“This is a brutal loss for all of us. We will miss you terribly, sweet Becca. Thank you for everything. Our love and prayers go out to Becca’s family and all who loved her.”

Rep. Sara Jacobs said on X that Taylor’s death broke her heart.

“Becca dedicated her life to serving others – from the Navy to advocating for victims of sexual violence to engaging more people in our democracy,” Jacobs said. “She was kind, funny, sharp and endlessly selfless. I will miss her.”

Governor Gavin Newsom also had a message to the public about Taylor:

“Jennifer and I are deeply saddened by the tragic and sudden loss of Rebecca Taylor. Her dedication to public service and remarkable impact on the San Diego community will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and loved ones during this time.”
