JD Vance’s book “Hillbilly Elegy” is soaring in video streaming and in stores’ reorder lists

The bestselling memoirs of Senator JD Vance (R-OH), Hillbilly ElegyBook sales of “The 40 Years of the 40 Years of the 40 Years” have exploded, and the film based on his book is at the top of streaming service trending lists after former President Donald Trump named the senator as his vice presidential running mate for 2024.

In his memoirs, published by HarperCollins, Vance describes his difficult childhood and his life of poverty in the Appalachians.

The 2020 film adaptation of his memoir, directed by Ron Howard and starring Glenn Close and Amy Adams, has seen a 1,180% increase in video streaming views, according to research firm Luminate. As of Wednesday, the film ranked fourth among the most streamed films on Netflix.

His paperback memoir has remained at No. 1 on Amazon’s bestseller list, and his hardcover copy is No. 2 on the list as of Tuesday. The book was also part of Amazon’s Prime Day deals this week. Vance’s paperback was discounted from $17.99 to $7.45, and the Kindle version was discounted from $17.99 to $13.49 for a limited time during Prime Day.

While Amazon continues to sell large quantities of Vance’s books, some bookstores have found they can barely keep up with demand.

“I already have a request for Hillbilly Elegy before I opened my doors this morning. Overnight this book has become very popular and is already backordered from the publisher,” Little Green Bookstore in Zelienope, Pennsylvania, wrote on its Facebook page. “I received several calls this morning. I have sold all the used copies I had in stock but will check my inventory for more. My order is with the publisher and they expect delivery after July 20th.”

“Unless a seller already has stock – this is the case with every bookseller – so please bear with us. In the meantime, if you have a copy and would like to donate it to the store, we will definitely make sure it gets into the hands of a reader,” the bookstore added.

Goodreads reportedly saw a spike in reviews for the book, prompting the algorithm to temporarily limit a book’s ratings or reviews due to the “unusual” activity on the site.

“There are temporary restrictions on rating and review submissions for this book. This may be because we have detected unusual behavior that does not comply with our review guidelines,” a Goodreads message said.
