The Cape Cod Flamingo appears to be back – NBC Boston

The Cape Cod Flamingo appears to be back – NBC Boston

A flamingo that may have made Cape Cod history earlier this summer appears to be back.

Birdwatchers spotted a flamingo on the beach at Dennis Chapin Beach this Monday, weeks after another sighting. Some experts believe the flamingo spotted swimming, flying and wading in Massachusetts waters is the same as the first one. If proven to be wild, this would be the first American flamingo confirmed to have visited the Bay State alone.

Lisa Schibley, coordinator of the bird research and conservation group Manomet, told NBC10 Boston that it may be the same flamingo spotted basking in the summer sun in June. The bird may have returned after a stay in Long Island, New York.

She said the bird was originally found by MJ Foti, who was doing research for Manomet’s coastal birding project. Foti shared her find with the birding community through a rare bird GroupMe chat.

This bird, like dozens of other flamingos, was probably displaced from its home by a hurricane last August, according to Mark Faherty, science coordinator for Mass Audubon, in a post on WCAI. It has traveled from the Hamptons to Cape Cod.

Before Monday, it had not been seen since the last sighting in East Hampton in early June.

Faherty, who previously told NBC10 Boston that the bird had yet to be confirmed to be wild, said via WCAI that the animal was indeed the first wild flamingo ever reported in Massachusetts.
