Charli XCX apparently reacts to Taylor Swift blocking the British charts

Charli XCX has apparently responded to Taylor Swift’s “chart-blocking” tactics, which brat from number one in the UK. Swift’s album The “Tortured Poets” section has maintained its place at the top since its release in April, but when Charli XCX’s sixth studio album (out June 7) threatened that dominance, some fans accused Swift of using “greedy” tactics to hold on to the number one spot.

“Taylor was aiming for her longest run at number one on the UK album charts. And shortly after it was announced that Charli was at number one, (Swift) pulled the plug and released more special editions of The “Tortured Poets” section”, podcaster Sam Murphy on TikTok. “I understand some of these things are planned, but this was not a global release. It was specifically targeted at UK customers, which certainly means it’s about the charts.”

The reaction of brat Fans were, er, Swift. “A stolen win is not a real win, Charli XCX is the winner. SAY WHAT YOU WANT, I don’t give a shit,” tweeted one fan. “Taylor Swift is greedy and far from a feminist but at least Charli has talent,” said another.

During her show in Los Angeles on June 15, 2024, Charli XCX responded subtly to the controversy. She asked the audience, “What’s the next song?” and looked at the setlist before realizing it was “Sympathy With a Knife.” The crowd cheered in response. “That’s interesting,” Charli XCX said, adding, “I just feel like the artistry shines through.”

“Sympathy With a Knife” is said to be about Swift, who had a wild, two-month affair with The 1975 frontman Matty Healy. Charli is now engaged to the band’s drummer, George Daniel. “I don’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show / I’m crossing my fingers behind my back, I hope they break up quick,” Charli sings. (Charli and Daniel only got engaged in November, months after Swift and Healy split, so it makes sense that she calls him her “boyfriend.”)
