The Boys and Girls Club is hosting a candidate forum for the House of Representatives on Thursday

A forum featuring Michigan House candidates is scheduled for Thursday, July 18, at the Benton Harbor Teen Center of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Southwest Michigan.

Tess Ulrey of the Boys and Girls Club tells us they invited candidates for State House in the 38th and 37th districts to speak about youth issues.

“It’s really important that we create a connection between our elected leaders and the youth in our community, but also their families,” Ulrey said. “Although as a 501(c)(3) we don’t take a political position, our voice is very important and we will always advocate for policies or legislation that support positive youth development.”

Ulrey says the candidates are asked questions by young people who participate in Boys and Girls Club programs.

“The questions we ask these candidates revolve around issues surrounding youth and families in Southwest Michigan. To answer these questions, we actually surveyed all of our families who participate in Boys and Girls Clubs programs.”

In attendance are Democratic state representative Joey Andrews and the two Republicans running in a primary to replace him, Kevin Whiteford and George Lucas. Also in attendance are state representative Brad Paquette and his Democratic opponent Angela Jones.

The forum is open to the public and will also be streamed live on the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Southwest Michigan YouTube channel. It begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Youth Center on Empire Avenue and lasts approximately one hour.

Ulrey says the Boys and Girls Club is also planning an ice cream party with county and city election candidates on July 23 from 4 to 5 p.m. at its youth campus. Everyone is invited.
