Falmouth native Chris Poole scores a major sailing victory

SAILING

Falmouth native Chris Poole recently became the first American sailor in the 30-year history of Match Cup Sweden to captain a team to victory.

Poole’s four-man Riptide Racing team took the win on July 8 in Marstrand, Sweden. The Match Cup Sweden is part of the World Match Racing Tour.

Poole, 35, is currently ranked first in the WMRT rankings. In April, he won the Congressional Cup for the second year in a row in Long Beach, California.

BASEBALL

MLB: Paul Skenes, Shohei Ohtani, Jarren Duran and the rest of this year’s All-Stars drew 7,443,000 viewers on Fox, up 6% from the 2023 game but the second-lowest for the event.

The American League’s 5-3 win in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday night was up from the 7,006,000 viewers who attended the National League’s 3-2 win in Seattle last year. The 2022 game in Los Angeles was watched by 7.51 million viewers.

This year’s game had a rating of 3.8 and a market share of 12, which is down from last year’s 3.9/12. Rating indicates the percentage of television households that tuned in to a program, and market share indicates the percentage that tuned in to a program in those households that had a television on.

Another 116,000 viewers watched Fox Deportes’ Spanish-language coverage, 36% more than last year’s 85,000.

Monday night’s Home Run Derby, won by Teoscar Hernández of the Los Angeles Dodgers, drew 5.45 million viewers on ESPN, down 11% from last year’s 6.11 million and 2022’s 6.88 million. This year’s derby coincided with the first night of the Republican National Convention.

BASKETBALL

NBA: Kayla McBride had 30 points and four 3-pointers, Natisha Hiedeman scored 16 of 18 points (a season-high) in the fourth quarter and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Atlanta Dream 86-79.

Minnesota outscored the Dream 30-19 in the final 10 minutes, scoring the most points in a fourth quarter of the season.

• The Connecticut Sun acquired Marina Mabrey from the Chicago Sky for Rachel Banham, Moriah Jefferson and the team’s 2025 first-round pick.

Mabrey averaged 14 points, 4.9 rebounds and 4.5 assists for the Sky this season, starting 24 games. She was originally drafted 19th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2019.

JURISPRUDENCE: A federal judge has denied former NBA player Jontay Porter’s request to be allowed to continue his basketball career in Greece while he awaits sentencing for his role in a betting scandal that led to his expulsion from the league.

Porter had asked in a letter from attorney Jeff Jensen on Tuesday to change some conditions of his bail so that he could get his U.S. passport back, travel in Europe and live in Patras, Greece. Jensen told the court that Porter will play for Greek club Promitheas BC.

However, a court memo shows that the request was denied by Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall. Jensen declined to comment on the decision.

FOOTBALL

NFL: The Chicago Bears signed their two best rookies by signing first-round draft pick Caleb Williams and ninth-rounder Rome Odunze to four-year deals, avoiding any training camp drama with their high-profile quarterback and wide receiver.

The Bears announced the signing of Williams on Wednesday and Odunze on Tuesday.

A person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press that Williams will receive a guaranteed $39.49 million contract with a $25.5 million signing bonus. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team has not yet disclosed contract details.

The Bears announced the signing of Odunze on Tuesday. The club has an option for both players until 2028.

The Bears’ rookies are scheduled to report to training camp on Tuesday, the veterans on Friday. The first practice is on Saturday.

MOTOR RACE

NASCAR: Rick Hendrick doesn’t have to participate in qualifying for this weekend’s Brickyard 400 to see who will lead the Cup cars to the green flag on Sunday.

Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials announced that the longtime NASCAR owner will drive the pace car for the 30th Brickyard race – and the first on the historic 2.5-mile oval since 2020.

Hendrick Motorsports holds all major team records, including championships, point-winning wins, laps led and, yes, pole wins. The team has won at least one race in each of the last 39 seasons, and Hendricks driver Jeff Gordon won the first Brickyard.

Hendrick will drive a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

RIDE A BIKE

TOUR DE FRANCE: Richard Carapaz took his first stage win in the Tour de France after proving his climbing skills on the final climbs in the Alps.

Two-time champion Tadej Pogacar retained the overall lead of the race.

Stage 17, covering 170 miles from Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux to Superdévoluy, began with a gentle climb through the Drôme region and posed no major challenges for the peloton. The final part of the race, however, was a completely different story with the climbs of the Col Bayard and the Col du Noyer.

Carapaz and Simon Yates led an early breakaway of 50 riders. As they approached the final climb, Carapaz launched a decisive attack on Yates before they reached the summit of the Col du Noyer.

Carapaz, 31, was also the first man from Ecuador to win a Tour stage. He won the gold medal in the men’s road race at the Tokyo Olympics but was not selected for the Paris Olympics. He finished third in the 2021 Tour de France and won the 2019 Giro d’Italia.

British rider Simon Yates finished second, 37 seconds behind Carapaz.

Pogacar slightly increased his lead over Jonas Vingegaard to 3 minutes and 11 seconds.

ICE HOCKEY

NHL: The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Evgeny Kuznetsov on the unconditional waivers list to terminate his contract, a move that brings an abrupt end to the talented but inconsistent center’s checkered NHL career.

Kuznetsov was still entitled to $6 million of his $8 million salary last season from his seven-year, $64.2 million contract originally signed in 2017. He is giving up that contract and will be allowed to keep the $2 million bonus that was paid out earlier this month.

Kuznetsov was the Capitals’ leading scorer and runner-up in Conn Smythe’s 2018 Stanley Cup run, but he’s been up and down since then, constantly the subject of transfer rumors and speculation. He scored 13 points in 30 games in a limited role with the Hurricanes as they reached the second round, and coach Rod Brind’Amour even left Kuznetsov off the roster at one point during the playoff series against the New York Rangers.

His problems weren’t limited to the ice. The league suspended Kuznetsov for three games without pay in September 2019 for “inappropriate conduct,” less than a month after he was banned from the Russian national team for four years for testing positive for cocaine.
