Moms Demand Action’s Joe Saunders named “Gun Sense Candidate”

Former Member of Parliament Joe Saunderswho is running for northeast Miami-Dade in the 106th House District, represents the most sensible program on gun control, says a major advocacy group.

He is one of more than 15,000 candidates who have received this award since 2018.

Saunders, a long-term partner of the Florida Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, said in a statement that he was proud to receive the “Gun Sense” award.

“Our community deserves leadership that is committed to common sense gun safety laws. I am ready to make OUR voices heard in Tallahassee and put the safety of all of our residents first,” he said.

“Please join me in this fight to make our community a safer place free from preventable gun violence.”

Saunders receives support from current and former federal And Condition LegislatorsSeveral interest groups, including LGBTQ+ Victory Fund, SAVE Action PAC and that Florida Leadership Council have also supported Saunders since he submitted for running May 1, 2023.

He Made history In 2012, he was one of the first openly gay people to win a seat in the House. He served a single two-year term representing Orlando in the House before losing re-election. Miami-Dade Property Appraiser records show that he has owned a one-bedroom apartment in Miami Beach as of April 2021.

For the past decade, he has worked as political director for the LGBTQ advocacy group Equality Florida.

He is the only Democrat running in HD 106. On November 5, he will face the winner of a Republican primary between Melinda Almonte and incumbent MP. Fabian Basabe.

Last year Basabe voted for A law that has now come into force that allows legal gun owners to carry a firearm concealed without first obtaining a permit.

He also supported measures that the legal minimum age for purchasing a rifle has been lowered or long gun from 21 to 18 for the last two sessionsBoth bills failed in the Senate. State lawmakers raised the age limit in response to the 2018 mass murder at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, which left 17 people dead, including 14 teenage students.

Independent candidate Maureen Saunders Scotta St. Johns County resident who changed her name on the ballot last month to “Moe Saunders”, is also running. She is Joe Saunders’ aunt, and he has been sued her to prevent her from running under a name that differs by just one letter from his.

A hearing on the case is scheduled for August 1st.

HD106 covers a stretch of coastline in Miami-Dade between Miami Beach and Aventura.

The parliamentary elections will take place on 5 November.
