Bergie gives a look behind the scenes of the famous Heart Rate Challenge on Love Island USA
Carsten “Bergie” Bergersen, contestant of the fifth season of Love Island, explains what happens behind the scenes of the heart rate challenge
The famous, funny and dramatic heart rate challenge finally made its debut in the sixth season of Love Island USA.
The highly anticipated challenge appeared on the July 15 episode of Love Island USA and did not disappoint in terms of thrills, laughs and gasps. From Miguel putting his hand in the fire and placing it on Leah’s neck to Daniela kissing Kordell, the challenge elicited so many different reactions from fans.
In the heart rate challenge, the goal is to raise the other group’s heart rate. To do this, contestants wear sexy costumes and perform a little number to impress their opponents. The challenge is split by gender, so men and women compete to see which group can raise their heart rate the most. So one person from each team puts on a show for the entire opposing team. The men were declared the winners of the hit dating show Peacock this season because Kordell’s sensual, goofy nerd made most women’s hearts beat faster.

Carsten “Bergie” Bergersen, a contestant on the fifth season of Love Island, also took part in the heart rate challenge in his season. He spoke to The Mirror and gave insights into the background of the famous game.
Fans were curious if the contestants chose their outfits for the challenge themselves. Bergie, who wore an American-themed outfit for his round, shared that it was not his idea.
“I was supposed to come with the American flag and an American Speedo that was chosen for me,” Bergie said. “I was really scared to go into the Speedo, which showed more skin than I had ever shown before.”
Even though the cast members don’t get to choose their own outfits, they can plan their routine and have time to do so. He said that on Love Island USA they had “a lot of time,” about “three hours” before it was their turn. But the time helped Bergie not to be “nervous” as he had everything “planned out,” from who he was going to see to what he was going to do.
“I knew exactly what I was going to do, no matter how long I had been out there… so I wasn’t nervous because I knew and I had my plan,” said the former “Traitors” contestant.
“And when you have something planned, you’re not too nervous. But if I went out there and just did it like that, I would definitely be totally confused,” he explained.
He also talked about how having an elevated heart rate around people you’re not with doesn’t mean what fans might think. He explained that anything can make your heart rate race and that it’s not necessarily because the person is hot or doing something hot.
“It really doesn’t matter whose heart rate goes up because it can go up for a variety of reasons,” the 24-year-old said. “It could be that you were anxious, it could be that you were more active during one day than the other because you were up a little more … it’s just blood flow.”
“I think that’s the big problem that people sometimes misunderstand. I think more people at home misunderstood it than people in the villa because we’re so conscious of sitting there,” Bergie continued. “We think, ‘Our heart rate can go up if we just stand up, it doesn’t matter which girl walks out.'”
