Court documents: Cyndi Lauper’s son mentions pop star’s mother during arrest for gun possession

Cyndi Lauper’s troubled son mentioned the name of his legendary pop star mother and her hit single “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” when he was arrested on gun charges in connection with a shooting in Harlem earlier this year, new court documents show.

Rising rapper Declyn “Dex” Lauper begged police to call his mother after a loaded gun was discovered in his fanny pack on Feb. 7. He even tried to make sure officers knew who she was by reminding officers of the singer’s 1983 hit.

“I grew up, my mother is Cyndi Lauper, girls just want to have fun,” Lauper reportedly told a detective, according to new information as the offspring pleaded not guilty to weapons charges in Manhattan Supreme Court on Wednesday.

“Most of the time my head is in the right place, it’s my music,” he also told police after his arrest. “No, I asked people to call my mother and my life coach.”

Lauper, who appeared in court wearing a white Versace shirt, was caught with a loaded .48-caliber Glock on 112th Street in Harlem, near where his 24-year-old friend had been shot in the leg by a group of five gunmen moments earlier, prosecutors said.

The 28-year-old told police that it was nothing new for him to “have a gun in everyone’s face” as this was apparently normal given his past.

“All I know is I look up and I put guns in everybody’s face,” Lauper said, according to the newly released documents. “It’s not really my first rodeo, because I come from my family. And my mom and uncles and all that. So I was all calm, bro.”

The blabbermouth, who claims the gun is not his, also made bizarre boasts about his wealth, telling cops he was wearing a $20,000 necklace and was using it to pay the legal fees of his bullet-killed friend, court records say.

“I’m not going to lie, I paid his lawyer, so he took the bullet for me,” said Lauper, who was able to avoid Rikers Island after his father, “Law & Order” actor David Thornton, bailed him out on $20,000 bail at his arraignment.

Lauper – who took a plea deal to avoid prison for stealing a Mercedes from outside another rapper’s memorial in 2022 – rejected an offer from Manhattan prosecutors to give him a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence at his arraignment in Supreme Court.

He faces other legal problems, including possible eviction from his posh $7,200-a-month one-bedroom apartment in the Financial District for being a terrible neighbor, playing blaring music, screaming late into the night and smoking too much weed, according to an April civil court filing.

In May, Lauper was sued for sexual assault by a former girlfriend who claimed he attacked her after inviting her to his Manhattan apartment four years ago.

If convicted of second-degree illegal possession of a firearm, he faces up to 15 years in prison.

Lauper is due back in court on October 1.
