Car-hopping break-ins rock West Casper; residents urged to check their property

CASPER, Wyoming — Casper police are asking residents of a residential area off Robertson Road to check their vehicles for missing items. The alert comes after several stolen items were found on juvenile suspects Tuesday, according to a police news release Wednesday.

Police responded to a call about a suspicious person in the area of ​​Whispering Springs Road and Indian Springs Dr on Tuesday, July 16.

“Upon arrival, officers encountered juvenile suspects who had stolen several items from vehicles in the area,” the press release states. “Casper Police are asking residents of the immediate and surrounding communities to check their vehicles for any missing items and to file an online report if they have been the victim of a theft.”

Police are alerting the public to a trend of car break-ins known as “car hopping,” which involves people walking through a populated area and checking the door handles of vehicles with the goal of quickly stealing something of value. Police say this often occurs at night.

“We have received calls of this nature in residential areas throughout our community and in public parking lots,” the press release said.
