Man arrested in connection with death of homeless woman, Sacramento police say

A man suspected of killing a homeless woman outside the Loaves and Fishes charity on Tuesday has been arrested, Sacramento police said.

Kevin Birdsong, 54, of Sacramento was arrested by homicide detectives Tuesday night, police spokesman Anthony Gamble said Wednesday.

He was being held without bail and faces a murder charge. He is scheduled to be arraigned in Sacramento Superior Court on Thursday afternoon.

Police were called to Loaves and Fishes in the 1300 block of North C Street in the River District early Tuesday for reports of a fight. Emergency responders found an unconscious woman with a stab wound who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The renowned charity, which provides food and services to the homeless, was closed on Tuesday following the death. Authorities would not provide details about the altercation or whether it took place on the facility’s premises.

“What we can say is that this guest is known and loved throughout our campus community,” Loaves and Fishes officials said. “She was a regular at Maryhouse, Friendship Park, and our dining hall. Here she was seen and heard; we laughed and cried with her more times than we can count.”
