“Consistent Love”: DKG empowers children from the region to make good decisions and become leaders

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – Shawn Carrasco, organizer of Da Gorilla Kids, knows the importance of being there for kids and being a positive role model for them. He knows that keeping kids physically active goes a long way in getting area youth on the right track, so he’s made it his mission to keep Odessa students busy this summer.

The children who attend DGK camps often come from families that are struggling, either financially or because one or both parents have died or been incarcerated; children who simply need a mentor to help them through the tough times. Carrasco said the key to reaching these children is consistency.

“It doesn’t take much, you know, just consistent love. How does this thing grow? (Consistency). I’m there when nobody else did. I don’t always have the answers… sometimes it’s a hug,” Carrasco said.

Carrasco has led the DKG camp for several summers in a row with one goal in mind: to show the kids they are not alone. And they really aren’t, because it’s all made possible with the help of volunteers who donate equipment, snacks and time. Carrasco even gets the older kids involved and said the experience is all about empowering others.

“I have high school kids coach and cheer on my stations, give them leadership roles and give these kids a role model to look up to. Some don’t have father figures, some don’t have big brothers, so we give them that. It empowers these kids, (especially) the high school kids, and lets them know how important their leadership is,” Carrasco said.

Held in San Jacinto Park during the first weeks of summer, the camp keeps children physically active and teaches them how to work together, solve problems and be assertive. And, more importantly, it teaches children that someone cares about them and that they always have someone they can turn to if they need help.

In short, Carrasco wants to raise a generation of children who can stand on their own two feet, but are also not afraid to lean on others when times get tough. Carrasco and his dedicated team of volunteers also teach the children how to make good choices and do the right thing.

The camp has also helped the students embrace their faith and learn how to pray for others. Every aspect of DGK Kids is aimed at developing these children into the best adults they can be, and the students love it; every year the children come back for more.

“If you fall behind, the older children help you and cheer you on. If you are a little slower, they help you. I am just happy because I come here every day. I like to meet new friends. It is fun. Plus, there is food here, which helps,” said nine-year-old Zelaiya, who attended the camp this year.

Carrasco and his team work hard to connect with children and teach them valuable lessons through guest speakers who address difficult topics such as bullying, mental health and the growing dangers of fentanyl.
