Fans say ‘this is surreal’ after realising England were cursed by famous Brazilian writer after 1966 World Cup

“This is surreal,” gasped FANS as they realised that a famous Brazilian writer had placed a CURSE on them following England’s victory in the 1966 World Cup.

The “Three Lions” stormed to their only major international triumph this year, beating West Germany 4-2 in a thrilling match at Wembley Stadium.

England have not been able to repeat this victory since then, reaching the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup but losing two European Championship finals in a row.

Gareth Southgate left the dugout after Sunday’s heartbreaking defeat to Spain and fans are praying that the FA can find a top-class replacement.

However, it may not matter who the Three Lions choose next, as fans have discovered that there was a curse on the national team in 1966.

This blame was placed on them by the famous Brazilian writer Nelson Rodrigues, who was not happy about England winning on home soil.

His beloved Brazil had won the last two World Cups.

But in 1966 they endured a horror show, being eliminated in the group stages after losing two of their three games at Everton Goodison Park.

Portugal, who finished first in the group, faced England in the semi-finals but lost 2-1.

And Rodrigues then wrote an incredible column in the Brazilian newspaper O Globo in which he cursed England and accused them of never winning a trophy again, citing horror writer Edgar Allan Poe.

The article, published two days after the final on August 1, states: “I would like to conclude by saying…

“As the England captain raised the Jules Rimet medal with both hands after yesterday’s match, Edgar Allan Poe’s raven announced to the journalists: ‘Nevermore, nevermore!’

“And since the other cups are played on neutral ground, England will never again be able to impose its football without imagination, without art, without originality…”

Fans were certainly surprised by Rodrigues’ curse. One said: “This is a surreal read.”

Another explained: “If it has been like this for almost 60 years, it is a real curse.”

One remarked: “He has put us completely on the right track.”

Another added: “The guy was used to seeing Pele, Garrincha and Jairzinho play, for him it was probably all unoriginal.”
