Ranma 1/2 trailer reveals voice cast for reboot of anime series

The first Ranma1/2 Trailer for the upcoming revival of the classic gender-swapped martial arts anime that originally aired from 1989 to 1992. Following its Japanese broadcast debut on October 5, the anime reboot will stream exclusively on Netflix.

What happens in the trailer for Ranma 1/2?

The trailer offers viewers their first look at the reboot of Ranma 1/2, more than three decades after the original series concluded its seven seasons. The video also revealed the show’s ensemble cast, including returning voice actors Kappei Yamaguch as the male Ranma Saotome, Megumi Hayashibara as Ranma Saotome, Noriko Hidaka as Akane Tendō, Minami Takayama as Nabiki Tendō, Kikuko Inoue as Kasumi Tendō, Kōichi Yamadera as Ryōga Hibiki, and Rei Sakuma as Shampoo.

“Saotome Ranma, a teenage martial artist, and his father Genma travel to the ‘cursed training grounds’ of Jusenkyo in China,” the synopsis reads (via Anime News Network). “There, despite warnings from the Chinese guards, they fall into the cursed springs. From then on, whenever cold water is poured on Ranma, he turns into a girl, and a cute, well-built redhead at that. Hot water turns him back into a man, but only until the next time. To make matters worse, his father betroths him to Tendo Akane, a girl who hates boys.”

The anime is based on Rumiko Takahashi’s manga of the same name, which was first published in 1987. The new version is directed by Kōnosuke Uda from a screenplay by Kimiko Ueno, with Hiromi Taniguchi responsible for the character design. The other cast members include new actors Akio Ōtsuka as Sōun Tendō, Chō as Genma Saotome and Kenichi Ogata as the narrator of the new anime. It is a production by MAPPA.
