How to read JD Vance’s book “Hillbilly Elegy” for free

Earlier this week, before the official start of the RNC in Milwaukee, former President Donald Trump used the Truth Social portal to announce his candidate for vice president: Ohio Senator JD Vance.

Vance, 39, is relatively new to the US political scene, but before entering politics, he was known as an author, among other things. In 2016, Vance published his memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” in which he described the struggle of rural America through Vance’s own family history.

Vance was raised mostly by his grandparents, who fled poverty to build a middle-class life for their family. He later served in the Marine Corps and graduated from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. But as the book describes, members of his family could not escape the cycle of abuse, alcoholism, poverty and trauma so prevalent in working-class America.

Shortly after the book’s publication in 2016, Kyle Smith of the Washington Post wrote, “Although ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ is about people, not politics, it is an insightful guide to an unruly and difficult-to-understand group, many of whom are born and bred Democrats.”

Since it was announced that Vance would be the Republican vice presidential candidate for the upcoming election, Hillbilly Elegy has shot up the Amazon book charts: the paperback edition is at number one, the hardcover edition is close behind at number two; over 100,000 copies were sold on Amazon alone last month.
