Michigan: Warning of new government fraud scam

Another day, another scam. Thieves are constantly coming up with new ways to steal our information and funds.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warns of new fraud by government scammers

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is warning of a new government fraud scam targeting citizens.

Scammers pose as representatives offering “free government funds from the CARES Act” to steal personal information. Victims receive a message claiming the funds will soon expire.

Nessel says, “Scammers are constantly coming up with new tricks to steal personal information. It’s important to be aware of these scams and avoid offers that sound too good to be true. My department remains committed to protecting Michigan residents from these scammers.”

She has renewed her warning about fraud by government fraudsters.

How Michigan residents can protect themselves from scams

Here’s how you can protect yourself from fraud:

  • Block the SMS, email or call.
  • Do not click on links or open attachments.
  • Report the spam.
  • Delete the text or email from your device.

Nessel also reminds Michigan residents that authorities will not email, call or text you without you first contacting them by email, phone or text.

Other warning signs to look out for:

  • The person requests payment in the form of gift cards, prepaid debit cards or electronic transfers.
  • The person threatens arrest or legal action if money is not sent immediately.

If you feel you have been a victim of fraud, you can report it to The Federal Trade Commission And Attorney GeneralConsumer Protection Team.

The 10 worst crimes people have been arrested for in Michigan

The personal injury attorneys at Omega Law Group recently conducted a study to find out which crimes Michigan residents were most commonly arrested for. Using data compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) Crime Data Explorer, they determined the top 10 crimes people were arrested for in Michigan between 2021 and 2022.
