Jiminy Glick by Martin Short makes fun of Bill Maher and his new book

All fans of Martin Short’s longtime character Jiminy Glick are in luck: the problematic interviewer has returned from retirement to speak with Bill Maher.

Fortunately, Glick’s social skills didn’t improve over time. He spent most of the conversation asking Maher about other celebrities, interrupting Maher’s answers, or talking about himself. In between all of this, Glick still managed to make a few funny remarks at Maher’s expense.

“I love this book,” said Glick, holding a copy of Maher’s recently published What this comedian said will shock you. Then he quickly admitted, “I haven’t read it. No, I read it cover to cover, but nothing inside. But they say it’s delightful.”

Glick also asked Maher, “Everyone seems to love your book, but why are you badmouthing Harriet Tubman?” When Maher tried to tell him that his book said nothing bad about Tubman, Glick continued, “Well, my assistant is rarely wrong, but your book is a triumph. To what do you owe its success? Low expectations? … How does it feel to dominate a dying medium?”

Maher tried to answer Glick’s questions, talking about what he saw as the decline in reading in the modern world and emphasizing how grateful he was that his book was selling so well despite everything. However, he had to stop in the middle of his answer because Glick fell asleep.

Shortly after waking up, Glick joked, “I’ve always liked Bill Maher’s opinions… opinions on COVID, the whole COVID thing. I ‘love’ getting my medical advice from a club act.”

As Maher tried to explain his general thoughts on the pandemic, Glick again became absent and then abruptly changed the subject. He soon asked Maher, “Who has influenced you other than (Scientology founder) L. Ron Hubbard?”

Glick saved the rudest for last and ended the interview by asking Maher: “Other than the fact that you don’t have one, what do you think your comedic legacy will be?”

Before Maher could answer, Glick continued sarcastically, “Really, Bill, because everybody loves you. They do. I mean, the Republicans don’t like you, the Democrats don’t like you… but your wife and kids do.” (Bill Maher has no wife or children.)

Glick praised Maher’s book, telling him in his closing remarks, “I feel like the boring and tiring guests make me a better interviewer, so thank you.”
