WATCH: Pentagon holds daily briefing as Israeli strikes in Gaza kill dozens

As Gaza recovers from Israeli airstrikes that killed more than 60 Palestinians overnight, Pentagon press secretary Pat Ryder held a news conference Tuesday, saying a makeshift pier that provided aid to Gaza residents continues to be dismantled.

Israel’s Defense Minister said on Tuesday that Israel will soon replace the US military’s offshore pier for delivering aid to the Gaza Strip with a special facility in a southern Israeli port.

Defense Minister Yoav Galant said that Pier 28 would be built at the Israeli port of Ashdod to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza. However, he did not say when the pier would begin operations.

The US makeshift pier off the coast of Gaza has been plagued by persistent weather and security problems since it was built in May. The US has announced it is suspending the project, despite officials saying it has been successful in delivering much-needed food aid to the area.

Gallant announced the decision after a meeting with General Erik Kurilla, commander of the U.S. Central Command.

“The minister stressed the Department of Defense’s commitment to working with international partners to ensure the delivery of vital humanitarian assistance to Gaza,” his office said.

Gallant’s office also said he had ordered the military to set up a field hospital in Israel to treat Palestinian children who are unable to leave Gaza to receive medical care abroad.

The decision was made due to the prolonged closure of the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt. The border crossing has been closed since Israeli forces captured it in early May. Egypt refuses to reopen the border crossing as long as it is still under Israeli control.

“This is an important short-term solution that will address immediate humanitarian needs until a permanent mechanism to evacuate and treat sick children is established,” his office said.

It was not clear when the hospital would open.
