According to officials, she was swimming with her brother at Illinois Beach State Park last Friday when she drowned.

Her brother tried to rescue her, but witnesses said she was underwater for nearly 20 minutes.

When he couldn’t find her, the family called 911, officials said. Soon after, rescue workers rushed to the scene with boats and helicopters to search for and rescue the young swimmer from the water.

“We saw the girl come out about twice and then we lost sight of her and that’s when I started to panic,” said witness Silvia Mejia. “I saw someone screaming, looked in that direction and saw this boy calling for help. So I started screaming, like, ‘Someone’s drowning! Someone’s drowning!'”

Christian Tortorello said he also swam out to help rescue teams and used a life preserver to help them pull the girl to shore.

“I did what I could and swam out there. That was the best thing I could do because I’m not a very good swimmer,” he said.

“My prayers are with them and hopefully God gives peace to their hearts because I am a mother too and I know how difficult it can be to go through this,” Mejia said.

Authorities said the girl’s pulse returned on the way to Vista East Hospital in Waukegan, where she was in critical condition before she was pronounced dead.
