Beyonce’s father, Mathew Knowles, was furious when the singer got a C+ in math and her teacher told her she would “achieve nothing” as a musician

Beyoncé’s rise to superstardom is no accident; it is closely linked to the unwavering support of her parents. Her dreams were always a priority in her upbringing, thanks to her mother, Tina Knowles, and her father and former manager, Mathew Knowles.

This point is underscored in a resurfaced clip from a 2023 episode of “The Mindvalley Show with Vishen Lakhiani,” in which Mathew recounts how he came to his daughter’s aid and silenced one of her elementary school teachers who felt Beyoncé devoted more time to music than core subjects like math.

Lakhiani asked the Music World Entertainment founder to tell the story on the show and the celebrity dad shared it with his 198,000 subscribers.

“It was a Montessori school and I was on the board there,” the Houston native explained of St. Mary’s in the Third Ward neighborhood. “And a teacher comes up to me and says, ‘You know, Beyoncé has a C+ in math and she could do better and she spends too much time on music.'”

The teacher, Mathew said, continued: “She always talks about music and singing. She doesn’t do anything with it.”

It seems that Mathew initially tried to be diplomatic with the teacher, saying, “You know, I just want my children to do their best. I can tell you that she is doing her best in math because I work with her. As a father, I am happy with that.”

The lesson the “Renaissance” singer’s father shared with the host was that no one is an expert in everything, not to mention that children need parents who will be lenient with them in the areas where they are not so strong.

“I realize that we are not experts in many areas, and I think as parents we sometimes forget that ourselves. We are not experts in all areas. There are going to be some areas where our children will struggle,” Mathew explained.

The moderator then said: “We expect our children to get A’s in all subjects.”

The father of two children immediately rejected this claim, saying: “I don’t believe that. I believe that they do their best in every subject.”

A clip of the interview was recently posted on the X platform and many in the Beyhive commented on it.

“This is a lesson for dad that I can totally agree with,” one person tweeted. “Parents expecting honor roll knowing they barely passed most of their classes, shakes head.”

“WHO IS THE TEACHER????” asked one fan angrily.

Some people suggested removing the video because it exposed young Beyoncé’s problems with math.

Critics disagreed, including one who said, “There’s nothing wrong with the video. She was more passionate about music and singing. She knew what she wanted to be from a young age. Patents shouldn’t force kids to get A’s in everything. With some kids, you can tell right away what their passion is… encourage it.”

Others have fast-tracked Bey’s legendary career and wondered if the C+ really mattered.

“‘Who needs a degree when you go to school, LIIFEEEE,’ she had that vision from a young age,” wrote one X-user, quoting a lyric from her 2011 single “Schoolin’ Life.”

Even when Mathew spoke to his daughter about her math grade, he assured her that she had done her best in the subject. He also acknowledged that this was an area in which the girl from Texas, who later broke all kinds of records as an artist, had struggled.

Lakhiani asked Mathew how he knew that this meant that Beyoncé was neither lazy in school nor satisfied with just getting a passing grade.

“I knew because I worked with Beyoncé on her homework,” the father said. “I knew math was a challenging area for her and she tried very hard in it. And there were other areas where she excelled because she had the skills and love for those areas.”

Eventually, Lakhiani seemed to understand his upbringing, saying, “And you accepted the fact that she couldn’t be great at everything. You really encouraged the areas she was passionate about.”

Over the years, the world has watched Beyoncé grow up and witnessed firsthand her relationship with her architect father, who guided Bey from the early days of Girls Tyme to the success of Destiny’s Child, and was also there at the start of her explosive solo career.

However, their professional relationship hit a slump in 2011 when the 32-time Grammy winner decided to part ways with her father as her manager, a move that followed allegations of financial mismanagement, which Mathew has always denied.

Both parties publicly stated that the separation was amicable and due to business considerations rather than personal grudges.

The timing of this professional separation coincided with significant personal challenges for the Knowles family. Bey’s parents divorced that same year, a separation that was exacerbated by Mathews’ extramarital affairs, which resulted in two more children.

Despite these hurdles, Beyoncé’s bond with her father remains intact. In her 2016 song “Daddy Lessons,” she paid tribute to him and reflected on the strength and values he instilled in her.

Dad isn’t particularly loving either. Mathew always talks about how proud he is of his eldest daughter and is glad that he stood up to the teacher who couldn’t foresee the child’s fate.
