Oilers overcome 3-0 series deficit against Panthers and force Game 7 – NBC 6 South Florida

The 2024 Stanley Cup Final was once a 3-0 series. Now it goes into a 7th game.

The Edmonton Oilers won their third straight elimination game against the Florida Panthers on Friday, tying the series at 3-3 and forcing a Game 7. The Oilers won Game 6 5-1 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

Connor McDavid and Co. are only the third team to ever force a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Final after trailing 3-0 once in the series. And Edmonton is now just one win away from becoming the second team to overcome a 3-0 deficit in the Cup Final series. There have only been four NHL clubs to ever overcome a 3-0 deficit in the postseason.

The Oilers opened Game 6 with three unanswered goals and took a 3-0 lead into the third period. Warren Foegele scored the game’s first goal seven minutes into the opening period.

Adam Henrique and Zach Hyman then extended Edmonton’s lead with goals in the second period. Henrique scored on a power play while Hyman beat Sergei Bobrovsky on a solo effort.

Aleksander Barkov put Florida on the scoreboard a minute into the final period, but the Panthers couldn’t get any closer as their power play problems continued. Florida made 0 of 3 power play attempts, including a power play opportunity in the third period.

Ryan McLeod and Darnell Nurse scored goals into the empty net for Edmonton in the final minutes to secure the win.

The Oilers’ Game 7 against the Panthers is scheduled for Monday night. The Panthers, seeking their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, have home-court advantage at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.
