Former UNK player, GA founds new volleyball club

KEARNEY, Nebraska (KSNB) – Former UNK volleyball player and graduate assistant Maddie Squiers is continuing her volleyball career by leaving her full-time coaching job to take on a new challenge: starting the Antelope Volleyball Club.

“I just knew this was what I wanted to do. Nothing gave me as much passion as clubs, lessons and camps and working with and developing young players in this area,” said Squiers.

Many talented volleyball players from the Tri-Cities regularly travel to Lincoln and Omaha to participate in high-level volleyball practices and games. Squiers said she wanted to provide that opportunity to athletes in the Tri-Cities without it becoming a costly, years-long endeavor.

“I think we will be able to compete with teams from other parts of the state, but what is missing in this area is a large club that allows you to play multiple sports,” she said.

AVC will continue to offer classes and private lessons, but by moving to the club premises will offer teams for youth ages 10 to 18. The goal is to field two teams per age group.

“There’s definitely a need,” Squiers said. “When I was younger, it wasn’t very common. I don’t think I’ve ever had private lessons. Just the impact it has, and from what I see and hear, it’s really special. I’m glad I can offer that to this community and to Kearney and the surrounding towns.”

Squiers said she will remain on the UNK staff as a part-time assistant, but her primary focus will be on the AVC and growing youth volleyball in the region.
