Fresh off its Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest, Nathan’s Famous is continuing the hot dog craze with an offering that takes customers back in time.
In honor of National Hot Dog Day on Wednesday, July 17, the legendary eatery is serving hot dogs for just 5 cents – a throwback to the original prices when Nathan’s opened in 1916.
Founded in 1991 by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council, National Hot Dog Day coincides with the annual hot dog lunch on Capitol Hill, where members of Congress, lobbyists and journalists gather for a picnic. Since then, the day has inspired specials at restaurants nationwide and is celebrated every third Wednesday in July.
From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Wednesday, participating Nathan’s locations, including the flagship on Surf Avenue in Coney Island, will honor this century-old offering. But customers should still pack their wallets—this nostalgic price limits you to two hot dogs per order.
July holds special significance for Nathan’s of Coney Island, as it recently crowned a new champion in its annual hot dog eating contest. Patrick Bertoletti took the men’s title by devouring 58 hot dogs, while Miki Sudo set a world record earlier this month, winning her tenth women’s title.
