On Monday evening, country singer Ingrid Andress opened the 2024 Home Run Derby with a sensational rendition of the national anthem that sparked widespread reactions on social media.
At Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, Andress kicked off the Major League Baseball event after an introduction by Marcello Hernández. The “Saturday Night Live” comedian warmed up the crowd before Andress’s performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
The singer-songwriter and four-time Grammy nominee from Nashville then took the field to perform the anthem.
After the performance of the anthem, social media users went wild and criticized Andress’ singing.
Reactions to Ingrid Andress’ performance of the Home Run Derby anthem
Major points of criticism were Andress’s high notes and the “cursive singing”, although the performance was overall “interesting”.
Many social media users pounced on Andress, saying that her performance as the most tragic anthem performance finally surpassed Fergie’s performance at the 2018 NBA All-Star Game.

One X-user wrote: “Fergie watches Ingrid Andress take the title for worst national anthem ever.”
Another user said: “Good news: We all now know who Ingrid Andress is. Bad news: That was possibly the worst rendition of the national anthem in sports history.”

Ingrid Andress apologizes for her anthem performance: “I was drunk last night”
On Tuesday afternoon, Andress posted a message about her performance on Instagram.
Andress said, “I’m not kidding you, I was drunk last night. I’m checking myself into a facility today to get the help I need.”
“That wasn’t me last night,” she continued.
“I apologize to MLB, all the fans and this country that I love so much for this performance. I will tell you all what rehab is like. I hear it’s a lot of fun. xo, Ingrid.”
Andress’s vulnerable post has received numerous supportive comments from the country music community.
“Sending you love, Ingrid,” Carly Pearce said. “It takes a lot to be so open. You can do it. Hang in there. ❤️”
Singer-songwriter Julia Michaels commented: “I love you girl. I’m sorry you’re going through this. And I’m sorry the world can be so cruel. I’m here for you xx”
Who is Ingrid Andress, the singer behind the national anthem performance?
Andress is a 32-year-old Colorado native and country singer.
Andress attended Berklee College of Music, dropped out due to frustration with the curriculum, performed in an a cappella group on NBC’s “The Sing-Off,” and then graduated.
She then moved to Nashville in 2013.
Andress focused on writing songs for other artists, such as Charli XCX’s 2017 song “Boys” and Bebe Rexha’s 2019 song “Girl in the Mirror.”
Andress released her breakthrough single “More Hearts Than Mine” in 2019, which peaked at number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.
She has now received four Grammy nominations, including Best Country Song, Best Country Album, Best New Artist 2021 and Best Country Duo/Group Performance 2023 for the song “Wishful Drinking” with Sam Hunt.
Listeners may know Andress from the songs “Bed on Fire,” where she sings together with Teddy Swims, “Feel Like This,” and “Lady Like.”
Andress’ latest release is the April song “Good As Gone” featuring Marc Scibilia, a singer-songwriter from New York.
