Rumors about Michael MannThe long-awaited cinematic sequel to his neo-noir epic heat have been widely used since he published Heat 2 as a novel in 2022. The film just got a step closer to reality as the legendary filmmaker announced his intention to shoot it late this year or early next year. The Los Angeles Times reported the news in an interview with Mann, announcing the unveiling of the director’s digital archives.

According to the article, Mann is “in the middle of writing the screenplay adaptation of his novel Heat 2with the desire to start filming at the end of this year or early 2025.” When asked about the possible cast of the film – names like Adam Driver And Austin Butler were considered to be younger versions of the characters from the original film – Mann is more reserved: “I can’t talk about that.” The director shot his biopic about an auto magnate last year. What is “Heat 2” about?

First published in 2022 and co-written by Mann and the crime writer Meg Gardiner, Heat 2 is not only a sequel to the 1995 film that united Al Pacino And Robert De Niro for the first time on the screen. The novel goes back to the formative years of LAPD detective Vincent Hanna (Pacino) and professional thief Neil McCauley (De Niro) as well as McCauley’s criminal accomplice Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer) and Nate (Jon Voight). The film isn’t limited to the Los Angeles setting either; it explores the world of crime, from Mexican drug cartels to Taiwanese crime syndicates operating out of Paraguay. It then follows Shiherlis, who survives the events of the film but must flee without his wife and son as he tries to build a new life for himself as a criminal of a different kind. Ultimately, though, the film culminates back where it began, on the sun-scorched streets of LA.


The news coincides with the announcement of Mann’s digital archive project, which offers a detailed look into the filmmaker’s meticulous working process.
